About the Art of the Cover Workshop

The Art of the Cover instructed by Jon Foster will delve into the complex nature of successfully developing thought-provoking and visually compelling cover art in the entertainment and publishing industry. Students will learn and work directly with an internationally acclaimed cover artist as he explains the challenging balance of visually communicating an assigned narrative and also capturing the essence of the story, without compromising either elements.

This industry-inspired workshop will go into great detail explaining what makes successful cover art. Foster will describe the functions and the unique challenges involved with developing cover art for assigned projects in the editorial and entertainment industry.

Each of the three installments will focus on different aspects of cover art development. This will include a lecture of Jon Foster's work and description of his working process. This will include a detailed and extensive review of examples of finished art. The first Saturday of the workshop will consist of an assignment with an explanation and demonstration on how to proceed with the workshop's project. This assignment will be loosely based on several examples of assignments Jon has completed in the past. Students will learn about the entire process of a cover art assignment, from ideation to finish. As the workshop develops, students will receive further explanation of process.

Critique of student’s process work is a huge part of our online workshops. Foster and English will verbally critique and complete paint-overs when needed to articulate their suggestions. The workshop will consist of a digital painting demo.

If taken during the live broadcast, this is a completely interactive academic experience. On-demand sessions can still be interactive if you sign up for the Office Hours or Mentorship tiers. Throughout the entire live delivery of the workshop, all students will be capable of asking questions and communicating with Illustration Academy staff to heighten their learning experience.

At the end of the workshop, final critiques will be completed. Only students who enroll for Office Hours or the Mentorship learning packages are guaranteed critiques, but some students in the Basic Kit level will receive critiques out of necessity for the workshop's academic quality.
